Idaho Desert Exploration – Indian Hot Springs to Old Scott Ranch

Idaho SW High Desert Exploration

This will probably be the last official overnighter for the year before the snow begins to fly. The meeting point will be the same as the last trip. The Chevron off the Gowen Exit at 6:30pm Friday the 20th. With he sun setting at around 7:30, nighttime driving is inevitable. We will leave Boise heading towards Mountain Home. This will be our last fuel stop for the trip. ***Bringing extra fuel is heavily recommended.*** From there we will get off the freeway and begin the trek South on hwy 51. At the tiny town of Grasmere, we will turn of the pavement, heading southeast onto Rowland Rt Rd. From there it is 25 miles of of dirt to Indian Hot Springs, our first camp site for the night.
The Second leg of the journey is from Indian Hot Springs to Old Scott Ranch. We will back track about 12 miles and then head south for an additional 34 miles crossing into Nevada and ending at the abandoned homestead famously known as Old Scott Ranch. Sunday we will follow out tracks back out to the hwy.

Additional Trip Info/Warning
*Fuel- unless your have an extended range tank, We would recommend you bringing at least one extra Jerry can of fuel.
*Rough Tracks- most of the trip will be normal desert dirt road. However reports of washed out/ very rough tracks nearer to Old Scott’s Ranch were reported this spring. Because of this we recommend high clearance 4×4’s only. It doesn’t have to be lifted just good ground clearance and a good condition A/T tire.
*Cold Weather Camping- This will be high desert, late year camping. The nights will be cold. Make sure to bring appropriate cold weather gear.

There is limited info on both of our destinations, but here is a look at both:
