The northernmost two sections of the WABDR, my favorites!
This is about 170 miles, over two days.
Start at 8:00 Saturday morning, from the Safeway parking lot in Chelan, drive pavement to the Echo Valley Ski Area, then hit dirt roads and start climbing! Highlights along the way include Cooper Mountain, Methow Valley, Ruby Grade, Conconully, Lone Frank Pass and the Skull and Crossbones trail.
We’ll take a look at the abandoned mine site at Nighthawk, then head up to the international border for a turn-around point. The way back south is all pavement, good roads and highways.
Figure on rough roads, but nothing technical. Mosquitoes and black flies are to be expected, and by August there may be campfire restrictions. This is a beautiful route, and interesting. It’s a mix of dirt & pavement, so I don’t air down real low.
Family friendly, dog friendly, stock 4×4 friendly event.
On the vehicles, front and rear tow points are necessary, as are good light truck tires that can resist punctures from sharp rocks. Low range is handy to control the descent down Ruby Grade.
There are great motels and campgrounds in the Lake Chelan area if you want to spend Friday night there, prior to our Saturday morning departure.
If you’re going to cross into Canada at Nighthawk, remember it is an international border with all the usual requirements.
