I passed the technicians test today, pretty stoked about that. And I finally figured out how to program, ok start to program, my UV-5RA…. One of the guys who graded my test is looking to sell me of his HT’s, an Icom ID-51…. might be a better radio than the baofeng

Congratulations. Now just go ahead and go for your General Class license!😁

The Baofeng is a good basic radio. Programming is made much simpler using the CHIRP Program and an authentic programming cable.

The ICOM will do a lot more but is also a bunch more $$. Only you can decide if it is worth it.

Icom is a much better radio but you might be better off with a mobile instead of a handheld

We are happy with our Kenwood 710 mobile – also have a Baofeng hand held. Getting a good antenna is very important. Check out HRO, they were especially helpful as we did not know much about HAM other than the first class/test. Called the folks in Portland, they even arranged an install while we were there.

Yea I had an Icom mobile before, but it was preprogrammed for the desert racing channels, and I could not figure out how to reset it or add channels, so I sold it to someone who would use it for what it was modified for. The Icom HT that I might get is cheap, so honestly it’d be worth it. For a mobile unit I have been looking at Rugged Radios. I really don’t need a general honestly, I just wanted to be legal for when I did use it. There may come a time when I decide to step up, but for now I am happy.

You have a list?  Is it naughty or nice list?

Add me to one of those I guess…

    Thanks,
