I've had this Jeep for about 10 years now, and it has been evolving ever since. It is a four cylinder/5-speed with a Dana 30 front/Dana 44 rear with 4.88 gears and an Aussie locker up front and a Detroit locker in the rear. Lift is a Rubicon Express 3.5" superflex lift/Bilstein 5100 series shocks with Currie anti-rock and HD steering components. Warn 8000lb winch up front, Dirtworx rear bumper with swing away spare tire carrier. Tires are Dick Cepek FC-II 285/75/16" on 16x8" black spoke rims. Not shown in the first picture is a roof-rack on the Jeep.
Trailer is based of a Harbor Freight type 4' trailer frame with a custom diamond plate aluminum tub. Lots of modifications to the trailer frame and suspension. It has a Cabela's tent-cot bolted to the lid as an RTT.
I just thought I would share with you a trailer I built a couple years ago for my vintage Miata. My wife and I pulled it from Neah Bay to San Francisco. When the smoke cleared, I only had $450 invested. An overland trailer build is going to cost considerably more, I'm afraid.
It has been a slow ongoing project over the last ten years with a couple plateaus followed by major upgrades. I probably have a good $3000 at the most in it (would be less if I had just gone straight to where it is now). It could be built much quicker if you knew what you wanted up front. If you check out the forum I mentioned earlier it will show you how I got to where I am now.
I've been looking at trailers like this for a while. This looks great! how much do you have invested? both money and time
You bet, thanks!
Have you read through the whole thing yet? If so, you should be an expert now. Let me know what I can do to help you when you start your build. It is amazing what even a small trailer like this can hold.
Found it, thanks!
If you google Mini Harbor Freight (type) Trailer Ultimate Build-Up Thread it should pull up a thread from the JeepForum by armyRN (that would be me). It has become a very long thread, but there is everything you need in there to build a little adventure trailer.
I'm not sure how to send my email but would definitely like the particulars on your trailer.
And here's the tub when I first got it. Essentially I bolted the tub to the modified frame (reinforced frame and extended tongue), and then bolted fenders to the sides of the box. The factory slipper springs were swapped out, and a sturdier axles was placed under the springs.
It is a highly modified 4' trailer frame (similar to what you could buy at Harbor Freight or Northern Tool). The tongue has been extended, the suspension and axle have been swapped out, and I had a company that makes hunting dog truck boxes make the tub (essentially a diamond plate aluminum tool box with a lid shaped like the old military trailer tubs). It is fairly easy to make one of these. If you send me a PM with your email address I can send you a link from a thread I started on the JeepForum (this site doesn't seem to allow me to post links).
Do you have any specifications on your trailer build? I have been thinking about building one and your's looks awesome!
Sweet - love the trailer adaptation - esp the Cabela's cot/tent!
