Aight crew, I did it. I put money down on the White Rim Trail in Utah, just south west of Moab, at Island in the Sky, in Canyonlands NP.
The plan is to hit a lot of the things you can see on the asphalt on Monday, 9/10. Then drop down to the first campsite (Airport B) in the evening. Second day (9/11) is a long day of driving from Airport to Potato Bottom campsites. The 9/12 is rather short drive to Labyrinth, but I want to head out Taylor Canyon, and maybe even hike up Upheaval Canyon to the Syncline.
9/13 we punch out of Island in the Sky, drive from Moab to Hanksville, and into The Maze to stay at Cleopatra's Chair. 9/14 head out of the Maze and stop by Horseshoe Canyon to check out the Great Gallery petroglyphs after a 3mi hike in..
Anyway, putting this out there. It's a week's worth fun, and a two day trip to get out there. I have room for 2 more trucks on my ticket, if we want more, we will have to add it to the reservations.
Kdar Laris - is this trip still going? And is it full?
Benny, I'm planning South Oregon next year, how weird is that? lol
I drove the White Rim Road in April, and thoroughly enjoyed. You should have a great trip!
You're killin me smalls! same week as my trip to Oregon. This is one of those bucket list trips for me. Maybe next year.
I guess we got lucky. We made reservations in April and we are staying there in a week and a half.
The choices were limited though. We will be at Airport A. Then Horsethief the next night.
The sucky thing is you can only register 4 months in advance. So if you're staying on White Rim 2 nights, that means you have to book those nights on separate days 4 months in advance. Luckily midnight there is a little earlier here. Competition is fierce though.
Sure thing King Cronin!
It's pretty easy really. You can only make reservations 4mo in advance, so for a trip like this, you really need to be on it, as lots of people are planning spring and fall trips. The summers can be oppressive, and the winters can be brutal.
So get on the NPS reservation system, pick the dates and campsites, then fill out the details much like an online ordering system. NPS will send you a confirmation email with a link to pay the $30 permit (do it within 48hrs or you lose your reservation). It's a little weird the first time you do it, but isn't it that way with all good things? ;)
Once you take care of that, you simply head down there and check in at the Visitor Center and pick up your permit, as well as pay your 7-day park entrance fee, which is $30 for 4WD, $25 for a motorbike, and $15 per foot/pedal bike..
Kadar,
Can you elaborate a little bit about the process to get passes for White Rim and any other hoops you need to jump through? My dad and I are headed that way next week, but I though you might share the whole process. As I am sure some members do not know you can just DRIVE on down to Moab and camp anywhere.

Noted!
Take the detour down Lathrop Canyon between Schafer and Airport. A worthwhile sidetrip that will take you down washes to the Colorado River.
