Saturday I met up with a group of myself and 4 other Jeepers to explore Bon Jon pass between Quilcene and Sequim. The leader of the trip had made the run the last two weekends to check for obstacles and this morning we checked weather conditions. At the drivers meeting we were warned that we may see a light dusting of snow. We set out 2 people had winches so they were placed at the front and end of the group. As we climbed in elevation the snow became more than a dusting. We had previously planned to stop at the bathroom at the top but before we could get there the lead driver got stuck but was able to recover. I went around and parked at the bathroom area where there was about 8” of snow already and starting to snow. Soon 3 of us were in the parking lot. Where were the other 2? My radios goes off “Theresa send George back down, I’m stuck”. So off George (who had just gotten unstuck) goes. I get another call “Sam went over the edge, Jeep totaled he’s Ok". We (myself and my boyfriend, AJ and another Jeeper) walk back to help.
Long story short. BE PREPARED. We did everything right but we had no idea the snow would be so overwhelming and come on so quickly. I do not have recovery gear because I always told myself I didn’t really need it because I’m with people that have it. The first guy and last guy were the 2 that got stuck. I felt helpless.
We all made it off the pass and ate lunch together, we just had one less Jeep than when we left. It is unrecoverable at this time but at least the driver and his little doggy walked out and are fine. I am shopping for recovery gear now. I like the clean look of my Jeep and don't really want a big winch in front, although now I am considering a below bumper mount style. I am also looking at kinetic straps. What do you bring with you in the event that the unthinkable happens?

I have been looking at swapping out my bumper feom stock to one that will allow for a winch. I aways have individually packaged snacks, water, sleeping bag and extra clothes and shoes with me. I have been considering a kinetic rope as well.
thank you for the tips and I just may take you up on helo swapping bumpers if I do the upgrade.
Geez! That must have been harrowing! Glad everyone is okay. I have experienced this numerous times where this scenario has happened. It's not uncommon, but it does require some planning and forethought.

Wowza. Glad everyone is ok.
At minimum recovery gear should include a tow strap and shackles for each vehicle. Recovery boards are helpful. Always carry chains in snow because once it's compacted, it can become a sheet of ice. You can get a winch for pretty cheap and if you want help a number of us could help install it if needed.
