1998 Land Rover Discovery I – 50th Anniversary Edition
This vehicle has served our family well since we purchased it in 2000 still under the original factory warranty. It was our introduction to the Land Rover marque, and 280,000 miles later it feels like part of the family.
But, it has also introduced a little too much "adventure" into our adventures. When we lost our Subaru in the ice storm, the Disco came out of active semi-retirement as the camping and trail rig, returning to daily driver status. Then the fuel pump died and it stranded my wife. We were able to tow it back to the house, and I've worked through the fuel pump issue so it is running again. But I'm not sure what will be next; it needs a good home with somebody prepared to keep a high mileage rig on the trails.
With all of the great memories and adventures that the Disco shared with us, we now have Land Rover running in our blood. We are already working on an LR3 that will carry us to new adventures.
It's a bittersweet day, but we're looking for a new home for the Disco. Offering it here for $2400 as currently equipped, with the Expedition roof rack and HAM radio install (assuming a licensed buyer).

The interesting:
This is a running rig!
Baja Rack Expedition style roof rack, with 2x20L fuel can carrier option
2" lift by Ships Mechanical
Direct heavy duty 2 AWG power circuit (switched) from the battery to an Anderson Power Pole connector (supplied by Warn) that I used for a receiver mounted winch (winch is not included with the vehicle)
Direct 12 AWG circuit (fused) from the battery to the overhead front center console where I have mounted a ham radio. There is also a coax run to a Comet heavy duty lip mount on the hood at the right front fender. If this sells to a licensed amateur radio operator, I will leave the radio installed (like new Yaesu FT-2900 feeding 75w to a spring loaded Comet 2x4-SR dual band antenna... this is arguably a "perfect radio" option for a trail Disco).
Patina, including a variety of Pacific Coast Rover Club and related stickers in the rear door glass. PCRC badge on the front grill.
Recovery Gear receiver mounted rear recovery point
4-way flat trailer lighting harness installed
Added a manual switch on the dash to force on the electric fans in heavy load or high ambient temperature conditions (the normal ECU controlled operation when the A/C is on is still fully functional).
The things you should be aware of:
Saggy headliner (some leaks around the sunroofs, especially the rear if the tent is not mounted on it. The front is not leaking right now).
Some minor dings and appropriate blemishes for the mileage and age.
A front deer hit (right side, mostly taken on the bumper), minor cosmetic.
A minor kink in the driver’s corner of the rear bumper, doesn't obstruct the rear door, minor cosmetic.
The passenger front and both middle row doors do not fully unlock automatically on either side. The stem comes up, but you have to reach through the front door and lift it another couple millimeters before it will open. The driver’s and rear door locks works normally (automatic and with the key). Manual lock operation works fine on all doors.
One of the rear jump seats has been donated, the other is loose but can be re-installed (all the original parts are available)
The rear subwoofer speakers rubber surrounds failed and the subwoofer box was removed off the door to better fit a cooler in the rear space. But I have all the parts (less the speakers themselves), so this could be resurrected.
Throwing diagnostic codes related to heated O2 sensors (both sets, both sides)
The rear step is off (failed strut) but available
Other:
The windows all work, and sunroofs open and close
1/4" tread on all 4 running tires. Toyo Open Country LT225/75R16 tires mounted on original alloy wheels
3/8" tread on the spare, Michellin XPS 235/70R16
Center locking differential, high and low range all works
Original seat leather shows some signs of wear and distressing, appropriate for the age. The leather is not perfect, but I don’t think it’s bad either (one short seam tear on the front passenger seat).
Heated front seats work get warm
Stock 6 CD changer and stereo head unit works
Added Disco 2 cup holders to the center console
Both front and rear A/C blow cold
Actual mileage as of March 21 is 281,470. That’s a lot of memories!
The factory roof cross bars, hydraulic jack and wheel chock, and tire wrench are all included.
The original owners manual is included, and a Haynes Manual. I’ll also provide an electronic copy of the complete Land Rover RAVE workshop manuals that includes this vehicle.
I just renewed the tags, good through March, 2023
